Outmatched by Admiral Viper and the Time Shearer, Star
Truck was a sitting duck. The Time Shearer assaulted Star Truck with one high
energy disruptor blast after another. Relentlessly, the attack intensified
until, bit by bit, it overcame Poindexter’s ability to defend the ship. In the
end, the disruptor succeeded in penetrating the ship’s defenses and knocking
Poindexter unconscious.
The psychoputer emitted one last strangled moan
in Muddle’s ear, “Aaaaiiiieee……!,” and then fell silent.
With Poindexter out cold and the rest of Star
Truck’s defenses down, the transporter beam instantly became more energetic.
The beam crackled and sparked as a stunning swirl of rainbow-spectrum rings
sprang to life around it. The spectral rings pulsed and danced with menacing
energy as they surged up and down the column. In the midst of this dance, the
rings converged into a solid, blazing white tube of laser light. Then achieving
a degree of excitation that exceeded the physical properties of color, the beam
burst like an over-inflated party balloon. A million-billion photons scattered
rampantly throughout NavCom saturating every corner of the ship with a surge of
skin-tingling electricity. Then, through the improbable magic of nanowave
turbo-reanimation, an instant later the wayward photons were sucked back into a
single vortex of super-charged plasma, and then reconstituted into a towering
blue-black form.
Admiral Viper had teleported to the NavCom deck.
Outfitted from head to toe in a glistening
blue-black impact suit, and looming a full two meters in height, Viper stepped
out of the still active transport beam. At her feet lay Egbert, still flat on
the deck, helpless and terrified. Confronted with the very personification of
his worst nightmares, Egbert yelped pitifully and then passed out.
Dismissing Egbert’s irrelevant form with a
vicious sneer, Viper turned to Muddle, who stood alone and petrified next to
the NavCom command chairs.
“Captain Malarque…” The
admiral’s voice was bizarrely distorted by the audio modulator in her
protective mask. Viper observed sardonically, “…we meet at last.”

About the Author
Rocky Ford was born and raised in Colorado. He's always been a big fan of science fiction, and Rocky is particularly interested in the dynamic relationship between science fiction, the human imagination, and the evolution of social reality. For example, Rocky is fascinated by the influence that authors, such as Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clark, Gene Roddenberry, George Lucas, and others, have had on the the historical events that have unfolded following publication of their influential stories. In a small way, The Time Cheaters is intended to be an imaginative commentary on the manner in which science fiction has repeatedly fired the human imagination and, time and again, transformed the substance of social reality.
